A compilation of the quest, encounter, and 3D minigame selection icons that I developed for 2014's Adventure Trek: Quest of the Guardians. They're all a combination of 3D assets posed to help generate the final 2D image.
The project had a very particular cell-shaded style, primary due to a homegrown shader set in Unity, so to keep the final images as close to the in-game art as I could, I sketched rough poses of what I wanted to do, then posed the 3D models of the various characters (and a few environmental props) in Maya, imported them to Unity to let the shader do its work.
Rinsed and repeated from there until finding a final pose and camera angle. From there, it was a matter of using Photoshop to clean up any shader artifacts, spruce up the line art, and add other lighting and scene elements.
